Elke Finkenauer & Sean McDonnell: A Place in the World
Opening in the Main Gallery
Saturday 17 August 3 – 4.30pm
Elke Finkenauer explores the language of drawing in
the expanded field. She is particularly interested in line, gesture,
surface and process, and often works in soft materials. Her works for
this exhibition are inspired by ideas of mapping as a way of
understanding our experience and finding a place for ourselves in the
world.
Sean McDonnell’s works are based on the common
themes of life, death, and the frailty of life, conveyed through forms
and motifs such as hearts, skulls, clouds and flowers. His works are
visual questions to himself and by making his thoughts visual he hopes
to navigate his way toward a place of understanding.
Through their practices each artist attempts to understand their
place in the world. They reflect on aspects of human nature and ponder
impossible questions such as what it means to be human. Their works are
sites of contemplation – they are attempts at understanding, whilst also
being acknowledgements that understanding is a state of constant flux.
